White House: First Lady brokers ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in Oleshky, effective Oct. 29

The White House announced today that U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has brokered a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky, in southern Ukraine, set to take effect on October 29.

According to Reuters, Oleshky is a town in southern Ukraine that has been under Russian military occupation since February 2022; local residents have reported an escalating food crisis in the area.

Melania Trump has been actively involved in efforts to facilitate the return of Ukrainian children—who were taken by Russia during the ongoing war—to their families.

In a statement, the White House noted: “Both sides have agreed to a temporary cessation of all military operations in Oleshky to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid and to facilitate the evacuation of civilians via designated safe corridors.”
